2. BACKGROUND TO THIS REQUEST

This RFT is for the delivery of expanded PC2 Science laboratory in Building 51 Level 7 for the College of Vocational Education (VE).

The existing PC2 laboratory located in Building 051.07.07 is heavily utilised as a lab space for the College of VE. In its current format it has a maximum capacity of 24 students and is timetabled for 40.5 hours per week for Semester 1 2026.

There is growth in the number of science students, noting over the past five years the student numbers have doubled.

Practical delivery in this PC2 laboratory includes microbiology; tissue culture; molecular biology and aseptic techniques (free from pathogenic microorganisms).

The existing laboratory and its adjoining preparation area are no longer adequate for the volume of students in the associated programs.

Several proposed locations identified in the attached Project Brief related to Building 51 Level 7 and focused on the uplift and refurbishment of existing Microbiology Laboratory. The extent of the space required to support all the requirements articulated in the brief require testing via feasibility planning, to confirm if support space including prep and storage can be accommodated in the existing laboratory (Option 1) or if further space is required to adequately accommodate the functional requirements including any new ways of teaching and digital technology to support RMIT’s Education Plan (Option 2 & 3).

Please refer to the documents for further details. This RFT is for the procurement of a Lead Consultant (architect) including Service Engineers and Sub-Consultants as required.
