Upper Darling Salt Interception scheme (SIS) Disposal Basin Works

⁠⁠⁠Project goals

The Upper Darling SIS Disposal Basin was commissioned in 2012 and is currently operating at a reduced level of service due to a decline in the condition of the disposal basin embankments. The scheme consists of five groundwater pumping wells adjacent to the Darling River, collector pipelines, a disposal main pipeline and a 36-ha disposal basin. The purpose of the scheme is to intercept saline ground water inflows to the Darling River and reduce downstream salinity levels.

Once captured the saline water is pumped approximately 9 km southeast of the bore field to a disposal basin consisting of two interconnected evaporation basins and one Enhanced Leakage Pit (ELP).

The project involves comprehensive repair and reinstatement of the disposal basin embankments to restore the scheme’s original design and operational capacity.

Scope

The scope of work to repair the earthen embankment consists of:

1. Project initiation documentation management plans for construction and departmental compliance,WHS including Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) for any high risk works, environment and quality, and overall project management, construction supervision and labour resources.

2. Site investigations including Before You Dig Australia (BYDA), underground and overhead service locating, review of existing geotechnical site investigation data and reports, and additional investigations, which may require further geotechnical site investigations, as required.

3. Site mobilisation and setup including provision of site amenities.

4. Construction of haul roads onsite.

5. Stripping and stockpiling topsoil and unsuitable material to the south of the ELP located immediately to the east of the SIS disposal basin.
