Tender Description

The objective of the Synergy Grant scheme is to:

• support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to work together to answer questions that cannot be answered by a single investigator.

The intended outcomes of the Synergy Grant scheme are:

• multidisciplinary research that addresses major problems in all areas of human health and medical research, from discovery to translation.

• highly collaborative teams of diverse researchers including by gender, career stage and cultural background, working together to address major problems in human health.

Eligibility:

Applications will only be accepted from NHMRC approved Administering Institutions. A list of NHMRC approved Administering Institutions is available at: https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/funding/manage-your-funding/nhmrc-funding/administering-institutions

Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the Synergy Grants 2026 Guidelines.

Total Amount Available (AUD):

$55,000,000.00

Estimated Grant Value (AUD):

From $5,000,000.00 to $5,000,000.00

Instructions for Application Submission:

Applications must be submitted electronically using Sapphire (unless otherwise advised by NHMRC).

Other Instructions:

Minimum data must be entered into Sapphire by 5:00pm ACT local time – Wednesday 4 March 2026.

New application form questions (see Synergy Grants 2026 Guidelines, Appendix C):

• The Synergy Grants 2026 application form in Sapphire includes a new mandatory question about the integration of sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics and/or sexual orientation in the proposed research.

• Stemming from the Indigenous Research Excellence Criteria Review, all applicants are required to describe how their proposed research could benefit Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health and contribute to Closing the Gap targets research.
