Tender Description

The Principal’s Project Requirements consist of two major components: the design and construction of a specified section of the Perseverance Dam Raw Water Main (Perseverance Main) located near Mount Kynoch, and the design and construction for the replacement of selected sections of the sewer trunk main within the Gowrie Creek catchment area at Cranley.

The Perseverance Main conveys raw water from the Pechey water supply reservoir to the Mount Kynoch Water Treatment Plant (WTP) for distribution to the city of Toowoomba and surrounding areas. The Perseverance Main is one of the major water supply sources and is an infrastructure asset of vital significance. It was constructed in the 1960’s over a length of approximately 27.8 kilometres and consists primarily of 690 mm nominal diameter prestressed concrete pipes with socketed rubber ring joints. The main acts as a gravity main and is capable of conveying in the order of 320 litres per second of raw water to the Mount Kynoch WTP. Since it is a gravity main, pressures along the alignment vary depending on elevation and topography. This water main, together with the Cressbrook pipeline, provides the bulk of the raw water supply to Toowoomba. Under this contract, approximately 850 meters of MSCL pipeline (OD 813 mm) will be installed as part of the pipe main program. The planned route for pipe laying follows an easement off the New England Highway, starting from Hi Winds Road and extending toward Mt Kynoch. This new alignment has been proposed to avoid congestion caused by existing pipe mains along the New England Highway, including the existing Perseverance raw water main.

The sewer trunk main scheduled for replacement is located in the Gowrie Creek Catchment area, one of the oldest catchments in the Toowoomba Region. This catchment also receives sewage flows from other sewerage catchments within the Toowoomba City area. The selected sewer trunk for replacement comprises 1050 mm nominal diameter High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, along with Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pipes at over-support locations. Several sections of the pipeline are now in a deteriorated condition, which has prompted this replacement work. This trunk main runs parallel to two other trunk mains, with diameters of 675 mm and 900 mm, along Gowrie Creek. Together, these pipelines convey most of the sewage flow to the Wetalla wastewater treatment plant. Under this contract, close to 620m of the trunk main will be replaced including 8 manholes along the pipeline.
